Round trip or two one-way tickets? How to decide

On many domestic Indian routes, low-cost carriers price each direction separately, so a round trip is often just two one-way fares added together. Internationally, return tickets can be noticeably cheaper than two singles. Here is how to decide.
Domestic: compare both ways
Search the round trip, then search each direction as a one-way. Two one-ways let you mix airlines and times — a morning IndiGo flight out, an evening Air India flight back — and sometimes save money. Remember that convenience fees apply per segment either way, but two separate bookings may add a second set of payment charges.
International: returns often win
Full-service international carriers frequently price return tickets below the sum of two one-ways, especially on long-haul routes. Check a return first.
Think about changes
If your return date is uncertain, two one-ways can be easier to change: altering one leg does not disturb the other. With a single round-trip booking, changes and cancellations follow one set of rules for both directions.
Disruption protection
On a single booking, the airline is responsible for getting you home if your outbound is disrupted. With separate tickets — especially on different airlines — a missed connection is your problem. For tight connections, keep everything on one ticket.
